Suzanne was a lifelong resident of Claiborne Parish and a deeply respected figure in the Homer community. Known for her unwavering faith, compassion, and quiet strength, she lived a life centered around love for her family, devotion to her church, and service to those in need.
Suzanne’s life was a shining example of selflessness and grace. Her family was the cornerstone of her world, and her greatest joy came from being a wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Thomas Newell of Homer, who stood by her side through every chapter of their life together. Together, they raised a loving and accomplished family: Marcus Newell (Kendra) of Shreveport, Diane Rollins (Bryan) of Ruston, and Carla Benson (Michael) of Bossier City. Suzanne also took immense pride in her six grandchildren—Isaiah, Taylor, Noah, Ava, Elise, and Camden—who were the light of her life.
In addition to her immediate family, Suzanne is survived by her sister, Ellen Parker of Homer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mae Harper, and her brother, Donald Harper, whose memory she held close throughout her life.
A pillar of the Homer community, Suzanne was actively involved in local charitable and civic efforts. She was particularly committed to causes that uplifted women and children, such as the Homer Women’s Shelter and the Claiborne Parish Library Foundation. Her deep faith was evident in every action she took, and she was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Homer, where she served faithfully in various ministries and was a source of strength and kindness to fellow congregants.
A public celebration of Suzanne’s life will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Homer. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Pastor Gerald Thomas will lead the service, with interment to follow at Arlington Cemetery. All who knew and loved Suzanne are invited to attend and share in honoring her remarkable life.
In lieu of flowers, the Newell family has asked that donations be made in Suzanne’s memory to the Homer Women’s Shelter or the Claiborne Parish Library Foundation. These organizations were close to her heart and represent the values she held dear—care, education, and community support.
