Surrounded by his loved ones in Tracy City, Tennessee, James’s passing marked the conclusion of a life defined by quiet strength, service, and unwavering commitment to family and community.
Born on March 10, 1949, in Lebanon, Tennessee, James was one of eight children born to the late Robert Edward DeLozier and Julia Voline Wright DeLozier. Raised with strong values rooted in faith, humility, and hard work, James carried these principles into every chapter of his life.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, James served honorably for six years, specializing in cryptographic maintenance, a highly technical and sensitive role crucial to national security. His expertise contributed meaningfully during a tense period in global affairs, showcasing his discipline, intellect, and sense of duty.
Following his military service, James transitioned into a long and impactful career in education. For 34 years, he served as a drafting and computer building instructor at Grundy County High School. In the classroom, he was more than a teacher—he was a mentor and guide. His legacy lives on in the countless students he inspired to pursue careers in technology, engineering, and design. Known for his patience, integrity, and approachable demeanor, James shaped young minds not only with knowledge but with compassion and example.
James’s greatest joy came from his family. He shared 50 years of devoted marriage with his wife, Melba Adams DeLozier. Their enduring bond and recent golden anniversary reflected a relationship built on faith, partnership, and unconditional love. Together, they raised their daughter, Amy DeLozier Opatich, whose family—including husband Eric and daughters Cameron, Alyse, and Olivia—brought James immense pride and happiness. Known as “Papa” to his granddaughters, he treasured every shared moment with them.
James is also survived by his cherished mother-in-law, Ruth Adams; his sisters Helen Brethauer, Maudine West, and Marilyn Crutcher; and brothers David (Shirley) and Philip (Lee) DeLozier. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Robert, Noel, and Paul DeLozier.
A man of quiet but steadfast faith, James was an active member of Providence Community Church. His life was a reflection of his beliefs—marked by service, humility, and grace. Whether through his military service, his teaching career, or his role as a family patriarch, he left a profound impact on those who knew him.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday at Bonny Oaks Cemetery, officiated by Minister Roy Hopkins. The family has requested no visitation and asks that memorial contributions be made to Bonny Oaks Cemetery in his honor.
