The Hartwick College and Oneonta communities mourn the passing of Nicholas “Nick” Lambros ’59, P’02, P’02, PM’03, a cherished coach, mentor, and athlete whose life left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Known to many simply as “The Coach,” Nick devoted over six decades to Hartwick athletics, guiding generations of student-athletes with wisdom, energy, and unwavering dedication.
As a student-athlete, Nick excelled in basketball and baseball, earning a tryout with the Los Angeles Dodgers and claiming three consecutive City Tennis Championships. His competitive spirit extended into golf, where he captured an Oneonta Country Club championship and shared countless memories on the course with friends and family.
Nick’s coaching career spanned 21 seasons with Hartwick men’s basketball, compiling a record of 353–191 and earning NCAA Coach of the Year honors in 1979 and 1988. He also contributed as a baseball and golf coach, leaving a lasting impact on the College and local community, including his role as general manager of the Oneonta Yankees.
Beyond accolades, Nick’s true legacy lies in the lives he touched. He inspired, encouraged, and mentored countless students, fostering a culture of excellence, loyalty, and camaraderie. Hartwick honored him as the first inductee into its Athletic Hall of Fame, a member of the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame, and recipient of the President’s Medal for Extraordinary Loyalty. Lambros Arena stands as a lasting tribute to his influence.
Nick’s family, students, friends, and the Hartwick community celebrate his life and memory. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 12, in Lambros Arena, honoring a life of passion, leadership, and love. Rest in peace, Coach Lambros.
