Tragedy in New Orleans: Chef Fatally Shot Outside Daycare, Suspect Later Found Dead

Police in New Orleans are investigating a violent chain of events that left 36-year-old Carl Morgan, a beloved sous chef and father, dead — and the suspected gunman fatally wounded just minutes later.

Authorities say 21-year-old Raymond Wells allegedly shot and killed Morgan outside a daycare on Canal Street on September 30, stealing his car while Morgan was picking up his young son. The shocking act left the city stunned.

Just 15 minutes later, Wells was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head inside Morgan’s vehicle on Interstate 10 in nearby Metairie. Police said he later died from his injuries. Investigators are still working to determine who fired the fatal shot.

Deputy Chief Nicholas Gernon described the attack as “senseless,” noting that Wells may have fired at bystanders moments before the carjacking. Detectives are now reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements.

Morgan’s death has deeply shaken the French Quarter community, where he worked at Brennan’s Restaurant. Colleagues described him as a “devoted father, loving partner, and a force in the kitchen.”

GoFundMe for Morgan’s partner and young son has raised more than $45,000, as friends and locals mourn the loss of a man remembered for his warmth, talent, and unwavering love for his family.
