It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Darren Markland, an intensive care physician from Edmonton, Alberta, who tragically died in a mountain-bike accident in Clearwater County on Sunday, September 21, 2025. His sudden loss has left family, friends, and the medical community mourning the passing of a dedicated healer and mentor.
Dr. Markland devoted his career to intensive care, known for his skill, calm leadership, and compassionate approach to patients and their families. He guided countless individuals through moments of uncertainty, offering expertise paired with empathy. Colleagues and students remember him as a trusted mentor and inspiring presence in the ICU.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Markland had a profound love for the outdoors. Mountain biking reflected his adventurous spirit, love of nature, and pursuit of renewal. His untimely passing while engaging in this passion is deeply felt by all who knew him.
He is survived by his close family, friends, and the many patients whose lives he touched. Memorial service details will be shared once arrangements are finalized. In lieu of flowers, donations to ICU support services or trail preservation are encouraged to honor his life and legacy.
